How Many Grams in an Ounce of Weed? Sizes & Prices in Canada

An ounce of weed is 28 grams. The exact conversion is 28.35 grams, but the cannabis industry commonly counts an ounce as 28 grams, so a half ounce is 14 grams, a quarter is 7 grams and an eighth is 3.5 grams. This guide from Highest Farmacy, a Toronto cannabis store with same-day weed delivery, covers every size, what each one looks like and what an ounce costs by grade.

How Many Grams Is an Ounce of Weed?

When you buy cannabis, an ounce (oz) is 28 grams. The exact metric conversion is 28.35 grams, but sellers use 28 grams, and every smaller size is a fraction of it: a half is 14 grams, a quarter is 7 and an eighth is 3.5.

So, is 28g an ounce of weed? Yes. The ounces in our Ounce Deal and Mix & Match sections are 28 g bags, and you can browse every strain on our flower menu.

The weight of an ounce never changes, but its size does. A fluffy, airy bud can weigh the same as a smaller, tightly packed one. Indica strains typically yield heavier buds, while sativas are usually lighter and airier. Drying matters too: buds dried for a shorter time hold more water, so they are denser. When you want to know how much you have, go by the scale, not by how full the bag looks.

Weed Measurements Chart: From a Gram to a Pound

Producers, stores and other sellers use standard units like grams, ounces and pounds, but also informal ones like dime bags, zips and dubs. Here is every common size, from a single gram up to a pound, with the names you will hear for each one. A gram is usually the smallest amount you can buy, and a large joint takes about a gram.

Size	Grams	Ounces	Also called
Gram	1 g	1/28 oz	Dime bag
Two grams	2 g	1/14 oz	Dub
Eighth	3.5 g	1/8 oz	Slice, half a quarter
Quarter	7 g	1/4 oz	Quad
Half ounce	14 g	1/2 oz	Half-O, half a zip
Ounce	28 g	1 oz	Zip, O Zone, lid
Quarter pound	112 g	4 oz	QP
Pound	448 g	16 oz

The pound figure uses the industry’s 28-gram ounce. With the exact 28.35-gram ounce, a pound is about 454 grams. For prices and weights at the larger sizes, see our guides to how much a quarter pound of weed is and how much a pound of weed is.

Weed Slang: Zip, Dime, Dub, Slice and Quad

Cannabis has its own nicknames for every size. Here is what each one means in grams:

• Dime bag: traditionally 1 gram. The name comes from when a gram cost about $10.
• Dub: usually 2 grams. Some people use it to mean $20 worth of weed instead, whatever it weighs.
• Slice: an eighth, or 3.5 grams. You may also hear “half a quarter”.
• Quad: a quarter ounce, or 7 grams.
• Half-O or half a zip: a half ounce, or 14 grams.
• Zip: the most common nickname for an ounce, or 28 grams. An ounce is also called an “O Zone” or a “lid”.

So if someone asks how much weed is in a zip, the answer is an ounce: 28 grams.

What Does an Ounce of Weed Look Like?

An ounce of cannabis is usually a large number of loose buds. It roughly fills a sandwich-size zip-top bag. The buds are covered in tiny, crystal-like trichomes that hold the plant’s THC and CBD, which gives them a frosty, sparkling look. The colour ranges from light green to deep purple, often with orange or red hairs called pistils.

An ounce can also come in other forms, such as pre-rolled joints, but loose buds are the most common and most recognizable form.

Smaller amounts are easier to picture:

• 1 gram is roughly the size of a nickel.
• 2 grams (a dub) is about two large nuggets.
• An eighth (3.5 grams) is roughly the size of a golf ball.

These are only rough guides, because a dense indica bud and an airy sativa bud of the same weight look very different.

How Much Does an Ounce of Weed Cost in Canada? (2026)

The price of an ounce depends on its grade, the strain, and whether it is on sale or part of a multi-ounce deal.

Some people buy by the gram for simplicity while others buy by the ounce. Here is what an ounce costs at Highest Farmacy by grade (prices as of October 2026):

Grade	Where to shop	Price per ounce (28 g)
AA	Ounce Deal	$42.50 to $68 on sale (regularly $95 to $150)
AAA	Mix & Match (any four 7 g bags) or Premium	$130 to $150
AAAA	Tin Can Mix & Match (any four) or Quads	$200
Shake	Ounce Deal (56 g bags)	$63.75 for 56 g on sale, about $32 per ounce (regularly $75)

Within a grade, prices vary by strain. For example, at the time of writing, AA ounces on sale range from $42.50 for Sour OG Kush to $68 for Birthday Cake. Prices change with each sale, so check the product page for today’s price.

How Much Is a Half Ounce, a Quarter and an Eighth?

Every smaller size is a fraction of the 28-gram ounce:

• Half ounce: 14 grams. At Highest Farmacy, an AAA half ounce is $70 to $100 as a Mix & Match of two 7 g bags, and an AAAA Tin Can half ounce is $135.
• Quarter ounce: 7 grams.
• Eighth: 3.5 grams.

How much to buy depends on how often you use cannabis, how you consume it, your budget and your tolerance. If you are new, start with a gram or an eighth and buy more once you know what you like. Here is how each size is typically used:

• A gram is the smallest unit, good for trying a new strain.
• An eighth is a popular choice that balances quantity and price.
• A quarter suits regular use or sharing.
• A half ounce is for frequent use or stocking up.
• An ounce is the largest amount typically sold in stores for personal use, and it is the size our multi-ounce deals are built on.

How to Save on an Ounce of Weed

If you buy an ounce at a time, these are the ways to pay less at Highest Farmacy:

• Mix & Match ounces. Pick any three 28 g ounces for 50% off, or any six for 55% off. See the Mix & Match deals.
• Shop the Ounce Deal. The Ounce Deal category lists AA ounces already marked down.
• Consider shake. Shake comes in 56 g bags and works out cheaper per gram than the AA ounces on the Ounce Deal page.
• Buy in bulk. For more than a few ounces, compare the bulk weed prices.
• Compare price per gram. Divide the price by the grams. An ounce at $56 works out to $2 a gram, which makes deals of different sizes easy to compare.

How Many Joints Are in an Ounce of Weed?

It depends on how much you put in each joint:

• 0.5 g joints: about 56 joints per ounce
• 0.66 g joints (the amount researchers in New York used for an average joint): about 42 joints
• 1 g joints: 28 joints
• 2 g joints (what some daily users roll): 14 joints

There is no fixed rule, but people report rolling 40 to 60 average-size joints from one ounce. Occasional users may roll as many as four small joints from a single gram, while one gram per joint is a popular choice because it keeps the math simple and makes a reasonable joint to share. By the same math, an eighth makes three or four substantial joints, a quarter about seven large ones and a half ounce about 14.

How to Measure Weed With or Without a Scale

A scale is the most precise way to check what you bought. Digital scales are the most accurate, but an analog scale will also work. An ounce bought from a store should read 28 grams.

If you don’t have a scale, you can only estimate by eye. A gram is about the size of a nickel and an eighth is roughly the size of a golf ball. Visual estimates are not as accurate as a scale, because density changes from strain to strain, so use a scale whenever you need to be sure of the exact weight.

Ounce of Weed FAQ

Is 28g an ounce of weed?

Yes. In cannabis sales an ounce is 28 grams. The exact metric conversion is 28.35 grams, but stores use 28, and the smaller sizes are fractions of it: 14 grams for a half, 7 for a quarter and 3.5 for an eighth. Highest Farmacy’s ounce deals are 28 g bags.

Is 7 grams an ounce of weed?

No. Seven grams is a quarter ounce, often called a quad. It takes four quarters to make an ounce of 28 grams. If you see 7 g on a menu, you are looking at a quarter, which sits between an eighth (3.5 g) and a half ounce (14 g).

How much is 2g of weed visually?

Two grams, often called a dub, is roughly two large nuggets of cannabis. A single gram is about the size of a nickel. Dense buds look smaller than airy buds of the same weight, so a scale is the most precise way to check how much you have.

Is 50g a lot of weed?

Fifty grams is just under two ounces, since two ounces is 56 grams. That is enough for about 50 one-gram joints or 100 half-gram joints. Whether that is a lot depends on how often you use cannabis and how much you put in each joint.

What is a zip of weed?

A zip is the most common slang term for an ounce of weed, which is 28 grams. Half a zip, or a half-O, is 14 grams. You may also hear an ounce called an O Zone or a lid. An ounce roughly fills a sandwich-size zip-top bag.
